Braised Cabbage and Beef

Although I’ve lived in North America my whole adult life, my Eastern European roots still show from time to time. Being away from my family is not easy and sometimes I use food to re-connect with home. Growing up with a professional chef (my mom) running the household I learned a lot of great recipes, tips and tricks along the way. Cabbage goulash was one of my favorite dishes growing up. I was so happy that I didn’t have to give it up when I turned paleo. I love it because it’s very hearty and flavorful, but yet has a rich vegetable content as well as pretty inexpensive and easy to make.


  • Cabbage belongs to cruciferous family of vegetables, and as such possesses vitamins, fiber, and disease-fighting phytochemicals.
  • Avoid using the very core of cabbage stalk, as it takes longer to cook and it’s pretty tough to eat.
  • 21 day sugar detox friendly. Just make sure the tomato paste doesn’t contain any sugar.
  • This dish tastes best the next day.
