Coconut oil has been around for as long as human history has recorded. Since the ancient times it has been an essential resource for tropical communities in South and Central America, Africa and Asia. For most inhabitants of these areas coconut oil was an integral part of their daily lives, used in food, medicine, and other holistic treatments. In Europe and North America coconut oil has had rather turbulent history. It was at first gladly adopted by the food industry, but later deemed as dangerous due to its high levels of fatty acids and potential risks for a heart disease. Thankfully, modern research has proven that there are many more benefits of coconut oil as opposed to risks and coconut oil has regained its status of a superfood and has even extended its reach beyond the kitchen into other areas of our daily lives – primarily, ones related to health and beauty.
Coconut Oil for Hair
In most cases coconut oil for hair is used in a form of coconut oil hair mask. After regular application of coconut oil mask, hair becomes shinier, stronger, with less split ends not to mention it smells great! Simply apply a spoonful of melted virgin coconut oil to your hair for at least 30 minutes before washing or preferably leave overnight. Massage with your fingertips, spreading oil through the length of the hair avoiding the roots and focusing on the ends, then rinse thoroughly with shampoo. If you leave coconut oil on all night, it is advisable to wear a head scarf or a plastic cap to avoid staining your linen as well as to improve nutrient absorption from coconut oil. Alternatively, you can add coconut oil to your favorite hair mask. Just a small quantity would be enough to have an enriching effect. When using coconut oil in its pure form, be careful with the amount. Excess oil on hair is hard to wash off, so be mindful and don’t use more that a tablespoon at a time.
Coconut Oil for Skin
Coconut oil is rich in many beneficial acids that have almost miracle properties, ranging from rapid absorption to moisturizing, softening, smoothing and disinfecting qualities. Benefits of coconut oil can be noticed almost immediately. Skin becomes more soft, sleek, radiant and hydrated. Applying coconut oil onto face helps to maintain the health and beauty of all skin types, but it is especially recommended for dry, flaky, coarse, and aging skin.
In addition to the excellent nourishing, softening and moisturizing benefits of coconut oil, it also has defensive properties. After coconut oil is applied onto skin it forms a kind of invisible film which has protective functions, and helps to maintain an optimal moisture balance in the skin. Applied topically as a cream or lotion on the face and the rest of the body, coconut oil has antimicrobial and antifungal qualities that can help treat various causes of flaking, roughness, inflammation and irritation.
Furthermore, coconut oil helps to significantly smooth out the skin and shallow wrinkles, improve the overall tone and elasticity of the skin, making it ideal for sluggish, sagging and aging skin.
Coconut Oil may be applied in its pure, virgin form or, for better absorption of nutrients, it can be mixed with other natural ingredients and moisturizing and nourishing agents to create a coconut oil skin mask. A simple nourishing coconut oil skin mask for all skin types can be prepared from coconut oil, raw honey and egg. Melt 2 tbs of coconut oil and 2 tsp of raw honey over boiling water, mix well. Whisk an egg yolk and add into the mixture. You can also add a few drops of lavender or tea tree oil or any other natural oil best suitable for your skin type. Apply the mixture onto the face and leave for 15 minutes. Rinse with room temperature distilled water. Repeat twice a week for radiant, glowing skin in no time.
An alternative method for this mask is to use a blender. Beat an egg first until white soft peaks; slowly add an equivalent of 1 Tbs melted honey, and half a cup of melted coconut oil. Blend together until you get a creamy texture. Place mixture in a cream container and use daily in the morning as an express-mask for 10 minutes. The mixture should last for about 7 days, and it does an excellent job at toning and nourishing skin.
